dec 24, 1951 - Decolonizing Africa Begins With the Independence of Libya

Description:

By the mid 20th Century, four countries in Africa had already gained self rule by various means. Liberia, South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia had become independent either gradually or by never having been a colony in the first place; but on 24th December 1951, the State of Libya became the first African nation to declare independence from their former European colonists.

This was the beginning of a 26-year period whereby all the various territories in Africa would gradually declare their independence and more-or-less free themselves of imperial control.
